Published / To Be Published Works so far

As the title says I wanted to see visually what I've accomplished so far since like August to now. The pieces are arranged from oldest to newest. All these works are either published or to be published. I think it's something I should be proud of as I try to push myself through my art slump but also a good point of reflection.

Under the cut I reflect about this body of work further.

It's interesting and exciting to see them visually. I had also been writing down in a list of what I achieved so far as a thing to look at to gauge my progress. I think it's good. But I've only been able to do this much because right now I have the luxury of time. I've been going through problems and art is what I latch on to cope but that's not what I want to get in to right now.

The first thing that strikes me is the style. I guess I'm starting to develop a consistent one in terms of drawing and coloring. It's still not very refined or really good. I have a long ways to go technique wise. Some trends I see is an affinity for red/blue color scheme. I mean, it's a nice color scheme but I should experiment with other colors. The 6th piece is the most chaotic in terms of color scheme. I struggled to make the focal point stand out. I used a "glow" to make them stand out. It also make sense since Dimple is a ...green fart, ahem, spirit. I see that I like using that "glow" a lot. Not sure if good or bad. I don't want to overuse it.

Composition-wise I guess it's ok. The 6th piece again was a challenge in that respect. I don't think I quite nailed it. But it's alright. The 7th piece as well is somewhat chaotic in terms of color but I tried arranging the points of interest in a somewhat geometric, gridlike manner so maybe it's ok? I also don't like the last piece, a piece I submitted to a gallery show (woah!). I think I should have made it more "zoomed in." The close up bodies near the viewer just don't look visually interesting. But they do enforce the point that the girl feels small and overwhelmed. I like the tilt of it since it makes it look "off" and a little anxious. I think I could have made the crosswalk strips a bit brighter to add visual interest. That piece was challenging as a whole since the whole idea of camouflage (theme of the show) is to blend in so how do you make that the focal point of the piece? I also used one point perspective to make clear the focal point. Also color. Suit guy is a secondary focal point I guess. I just put him in cuz I like suits lol.

Three of those compositions are very similar aren't they. Gotta not ..abuse that worms eye view. I like using warped perspective on a lot of them because I think it makes things look interesting but I wonder if it's gimmicky? I also feel now that I could have put more details in some of them. Some parts are busy and some parts aren't in terms of detail of coloring/texture. But maybe that's a good thing? Idk. But it looks like it might not be helping with the cohesiveness of the whole piece. Idk.

I drew a lot of buildings, that's surprising. In 3 pieces. Not especially good ones LOL. Clip Studio's perspective ruler really helped with the 10th piece.

I also want to get better at anatomy. I'm really lacking everywhere. Just look at it...how embarrassing. The arms especially. The proportions. The 4th piece is really weird. The 6th and 10th piece arms, yeah I can't draw arms lolol. I'm not too good at visualizing the shape of torsos either. I'll work on it.

I read my fave artist drew like 6 sketchbooks in a year and a lot of random pieces of paper just working on anatomy. I'm not sure if I have that kind of drive! And that's somewhat disconcerting. But I don't have to be at their level... They're amazing. If I can over the years get a bit close to their level... It would really be thrilling. Sigh.

You know what... I wanna compare it to my past body of work.

It's a little all over the place but the top two rows are more recent than the last two rows. I really miss making these sort of artworks but I also have some qualms about them.

For things I like ... well they're scifi-ish and very bright. Very glowy. Gradients will be my downfall. These are all original pieces compared to my recent drawings. I think I need to stop doing zine work and do work for me, myself. Find what I love to draw. And that's what I plan to do.

The colors are interesting. They seem very harmonious. Maybe I can learn a thing or two from my old art. But they're also in rgb vs the cmyk of print illustrations. I think I spent a very long time getting the colors right. I also had a very clear vision of what the colors I wanted to look like beforehand.

The things I don't like ... I remember getting a criticism that has baffled me to this day that these don't have enough "details." I should have asked them to elaborate but tumblr fanmail is a bit difficult for conversation. I think I can see what they mean. These are all very simplistic with only a few elements. But it was also my first time really paying attention to composition, color, and world building all in one piece. It was tough and I felt that if I went overboard with details I would have ruined the piece as a whole. Up until this point I drew a lot of semi realistic stuff which I felt wasn't working out for me. After seeing Moebius, Koji Morimoto animations, and playing Journey, it all sort of gelled into this style.

There's a lot of standing around. Lots of static figures. The biggest hurdle to adding complexity to these drawings was my poor draftmanship skills. In my recent pieces I'm more daring with perspective and poses. I think that's directly related to improving my draftmanship.

There's also only one composition in a majority of these pics. *Focal point in center* Done. Not very interesting. Or slightly off to the center.

Might have went overboard with the starry sky and mountains backgrounds. I also rly liked blue and red back then as well.
