Perspective
Can't stress enough how much a good knowledge of perspective solves many construction issues since everything is governed by its laws. Something I learned the hard way.
- Fox-orian’s intro to perspective - Focused on composition but useful intro to beginners.
- Sashas perspective tutorial
- Ernest Norling’s Perspective Made Easy - (Book) Easy reading and explains the elements of perspective in simple way. Sort of dated.
- David Chelsea's Perspective for comic artists (Book)
- Scott Robertson’s How to Draw - (Book) Recommended for intermediate learners of perspective.
- Dividing things into even and odd equal parts.
- Reuben Lara's interactive perspective grid
Everything is made up of simple forms and is a harder skill to master than one thinks
- Form invention
- Drawabox - Strong emphasis on practicing forms in the lessons
Figure Drawing
When it comes to figure drawing there are a lot of approaches and I'd advise looking at multiple approaches to find the one that fits your learning style. It's also a good idea to supplement these figure drawing books with an anatomy book solely dedicated to examining the parts of the body such as muscles and so on as these books tend not to contain in depth information about human anatomy.
- Proko Videos on Figure Drawing and Anatomy - A lot of what is posted here are things you'd find in anatomy books and in some cases in much greater detail. And it's all out there for free. Good for beginners.
- Figure Drawing For All It's Worth by Andrew Loomis - (Book) This is the most commonly recommended text for figure drawing and anatomy. He also covers some useful information on the figure in perspective. However it may seem unintuitive to a beginner. I would also recommend looking into Loomis' other books.
- Figure Drawing Design and Invention by Michael Hampton - (Book) Hampton's figure drawings are more stylistic rather than true to real life but he covers the basics of figure construction in detail. Also Hampton's site that has resources for free (Blog is worth a look).
- Bridgeman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life (Book)
- Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Figure Drawing (Book)
- Charles Bargue's Drawing Course (Book) - Amazon Link.
- The Drawing Database: Marc Leone NKU - (Youtube Channel) Some incredible (and free) resources on fundamentals
Anatomy
Acts as supplemental material to figure drawing books.
- Eliot Goldfinger's Human Anatomy for the Artist - (Book) Often seen this recommended.
- Sarah Simblet's Anatomy for the Artist - (Book) Have not bought it but heard good things
- Anatomy For Sculptors - (Book) May not be aimed toward drawing but still full of useful tips.
