Portrait Practice #5

I thought it would be a good challenge to participate in Ahmed Aldoori's 50 heads challenge. I plan to do 100 ultimately. I want to improve my proficiency in the placement of facial features. And use it as painting practice as well. I plan to paint one head a day after (non art)work. I've been reviewing Hampton's notes on heads. I think reviewing Loomis and the Reilly method, watching Proko vids on the head  are worth doing. Here is what I've done so far. Ahmed's pinterest board is where I got a lot of these heads to paint.

I felt like moderndayjames' challenges helped a lot even if mentally. Doing 100 studies felt like a good achievement and felt like I might have been making progress.

I have been having difficulty finding illustration work this month but I'll keep on trying.

Character Design Practice #1

Recently I have been trying my hand of adoptables and also thought I might use it as an opportunity to practice character design and also use the work I produce in my portfolio...Yeah. I think it's a nice change of pace from background art. I'm still unsure what I want to pursue...

Drawing on drawpile is very motivating... I wish I had this kind of motivation drawing on my lonesome.

Figure Drawing 16: Hands Study

Hands for moderndayjames' biweekly art challenge on youtube. There was also a 100 feet study I failed to finish.

I also took some hand notes from proko under the cut.

Monoceros

Pieces done for Monoceros, an anthology full of incredible writing and art dedicated to the unicorn. It was a great experience being a part of it.

Hindsight is 20/20 so I feel like I could have done better.... But what's done is done!

Original Character References

I had forgotten I made so many character references for artfight. They're a lot of fun. I really enjoy drawing my characters since they're often a distillation of everything I enjoy drawing.

Demon Dude

I worked on this on and off for a long time. I found it difficult. I tried to pay attention to the values. A lot of my art has become less colorful because I want to focus on the values rather than resorting to bright colors to make an interesting piece. I also had trouble trying to place this figure in 3d space. It's easier if you consider the surrounding 3d space at conception then trying to figure it out when the drawing has already been laid in. I had some trouble with the proportions of the body which I only realized late into working on this. I looked at some reference photos and tried to guess at better proportions. I think it looks better as a result. But this is one of those drawings that you could work on forever. I felt the need to put an end to it.

I really like the idea of demons these days. With animal like limbs. Something different from the typical human. I think it's because I am often lowkey stressed these days. I feel stifled and wish to be set free like a beast from its cage. I think I have always felt like that though. I can express myself through art but in real life I'm unsure how to let loose.

Artfight 2019 Part 1

Some stuff from artfight. None of these character designs belong to me.

From left to right they belong to nijke, dizzyplaza, @galaxseed, illusional, davidgerously, @nyancittykat, mogoes, and memyou.

I have been doing a lot of background work so doing figure works is really enjoyable. I am afraid that I like it more than background work. I think it would be worth concentrating on my character design portfolio. I have always felt like my character work was weak in comparison with my background work. I think also that the act of drawing a background impresses a lot of people. But characters are so widely drawn there is a higher skill ceiling one must break through to truly interest others.

Mermay Concept and Drawpile Doodles

I started drawing on drawpile more. I really like roleplaying on drawpile with drawings. It's making me think about expressiveness of gestures and faces. I wanted to see if I could make my characters have easier to read acting.
I drew a manatee for mermay but I decided not to go further. It was fun though. I just couldn't think of a satisfying composition.
 Some drawpile doodles.

Mermay 2019

Betta fish and leafy sea dragon inspired merfolk. I don't really plan on making more mermay stuff but if I do have more ideas I might make more.
